Get Ready to Be Surprised

I know we can’t plan to be surprised by life and its endless events. Surprises happen when we least expect them. But if we stay locked in our rooms and comfort zones, we greatly reduce the chances of experiencing them at all. During the week, I spend hours working and taking care of the tasks that need to be done. Some of them are enjoyable, while others are not. Still, I’m happy to do them because they support the life I want to live. Having food in the refrigerator makes preparing dinner easier. A clean house makes life more peaceful. Work allows me to contribute and grow. I’ve learned not to rely on my mood to get started. For many tasks, I may never be in the “right mood.” Instead, I try to remind myself why a particular task is important. That usually helps me get moving. What Do We Bring to the Table?

A few days ago, I was reminded of the table as a starting point for learning within the family. I know this is not a new concept at all, but for some reason it struck me more deeply that day. Sharing a meal is one of the oldest and most natural ways to learn in almost every possible sense. Around the table, we learn to listen, to share our thoughts, to eat, to argue, to laugh, to pray, to solve conflicts, to play, to compete, and so much more. I was pondering this while walking my dog, and I realized that most of us bring what comes naturally to us into every situation. In my case, one of the most important gifts I can bring to the table is conversation. Conversation is an art. Not everyone possesses it in the same way. I certainly do not consider myself a master of it, but I believe I can offer something valuable: a space where people feel safe enough to be themselves. When that happens, real conversations emerge.
